This method stores the credentials on disk, and they never expire, but they’re encrypted with the same system that stores HTTPS certificates and Safari auto-fills. If you’re using macOS, Git comes with an “osxkeychain” mode, which caches credentials in the secure keychain that’s attached to your system account. The downside of this approach is that your passwords are stored in cleartext in a plain file in your home directory. This means that until you change your password for the Git host, you won’t ever have to type in your credentials again. The “store” mode saves the credentials to a plain-text file on disk, and they never expire. None of the passwords are ever stored on disk, and they are purged from the cache after 15 minutes. The “cache” mode keeps credentials in memory for a certain period of time. Every connection will prompt you for your username and password.
